At New York’s Opening Ceremony trendy shop you can buy furniture and clothing collection created by Harry Nuriev, the co-founder of Crosby Studio, an architectural bureau and a young star of architecture and object design. Harry talks about his personal view on design and his collaboration with Opening Ceremony to the readers of evelinakhromtchenko.com.

About the start
– As a kid I dreamed a lot and in a big way. After the school I studied at the art college, then I entered the Moscow Architectural Institute. But I worked beginning from the first courses. It helped me to form the idea of myself and my own practice.
I was born in Stavropol, in 2003 I moved to Moscow, and I got here my first major project, it was an urban improvement project. Since 2010, I often went to the States and the last year I finally moved here. But my first big steps were made in Moscow. That was a good school.

It is interesting that Russia has learned about the young talented architect who graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute and opened a studio in Moscow from the Western press. What’s your attitude towards this situation, and why does recognition at homeland often comes only after an international regard?
– It’s true. There is nothing bad for me personally in such a situation, but many talented people in Russia could be successful if our press supported them and cultivated them, instead of western brands that do not have problems with recognizability.

Do you have a general concept while creating furniture and interiors?
– It does not exist in itself. Each project in its own way is ideal. It all depends on who I do it for. Without people, these are just empty walls. If we talk about furniture production, then I do not do anything that has already been seen. Otherwise, what’s the point?

What is closer now: to create large-scale architectural projects or to produce small fine furniture lots?
– Something in the middle. But architecture is such a useful tool that can reduce and enlarge any scale, and this will not affect the operating process in any way.

How did the idea of a joint project with Opening Ceremony come about and how many positions did you release?
– I have always dreamed of working with fashion at least in any form. In Opening Ceremony’s flagship store in New York, we have our own corner with a street display. The collection contains pieces of furniture, decoration, light and some clothes. There are no references, I wanted to blur the boundaries between fashion and objects of design. Everything was created in one breath. The Opening Ceremony team is very professional, and it’s a great pleasure to work with such talents.

The collaboration looks very surreal. However, if to study your idiom, one can say that you are, rather, the heir to the constructivists. How is this combined?
- For New York it’s not surrealism. This is what they use now. Constructivism, I believe, is a sign of good manners for a Russian architect. Where would we without it?

The color of the collection – ultraviolet – is the Pantone Institute’s choice for 2018. Do you always focus on world trends or can you easily oppose the majority’s opinion, relying solely on professional flair?
– Honestly, the colour in my works depends on the mood of my project. I never think about the colours – I feel them.

How to properly fit the textured pieces of furniture in the already created interior?
- They fit into any interior. Another thing is that the collection is limited in the series: there will not be so many lucky ones.
