«MARGIELA / GALLIERA, 1989-2009» exhibition continues Martin Margiela season in Paris. The retrospective showcases 130 selected silhouettes, including house archives, installations and videos of defelies from SS 1989 to SS 2009. Maison Martin Margiela (now known as simply Maison Margiela) is more than a fashion brand, it’s the philosophy of a conceptual style.
Designer graduated from the fashion department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, in 1980. Before creating his first collection under his own label, he worked as an assistant for Jean Paul Gaultier between 1985 and 1987. In 1987 he founded his own label together with Jenny Meirens, in 1988 he presented his first collection SS 1989, in just one year his show SS 1990 became a real sensation. Martin Margiela stepped down from his own brand in 2009.
With his works displayed at two museums in Paris simultaneously, it’s clearly observed what great ideas he had till the latest fashion show and how clearly his effects were anticipated. Oversize proportions, deconstructed garments, clothes created from vintage and recycled materials, unusual venues for runway, short films in lieu of shows, untraditional models – are the things that have changed the structure of fashion industry and are of big interest nowadays. Martin Margiela is the “invisible man” of fashion, he didn’t go out on the runway, he denies any face-to-face interviews and avoids photographers. Despite the conscious anonymity, Martin Margiela stays one of the most influential contemporary fashion designers, and this exhibition is his way to comment on modern fashion..

The exhibition runs till July 15th 2018.

Address: 10 avenue Pierre 1er de Serbie, Paris 16e, 75116 Paris.
