The retrospective showcasing 120 original fashion works from 1978 to 1997 by the Italian designer is set on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Gianni Versace brand. The exhibition is supplemented by impressive and multimedial installations like a reproduction of Gianni Versace’s bedroom from his famous Miami-Mansion, including iconographic fashion, interior design, porcelain, jewellery. The exhibition is arranged by themes which inspired the designer: Baroque, Teatro, Bondage, Animal print, Punk, Pop-Art, Miami, etc.

Berlin is a significant place for Gianni Versace’s career: his very first fashion show was organized in 1978 in the small city of Lippstadt and his first fashion exhibition was displayed in Berlin in 1994. Three years later, on the height of his success, Gianni Versace was murdered at his home in Miami, Florida.

Co-curator Karl von der Ahe said: “Since Versace’s died, the public couldn’t see much of his work and even back then you could only see current collections. This kind of overview of his work is something really special”. A vast number of artefacts, making it the largest exhibition of Gianni Versace‘s original craft ever seen, are brought to Berlin by private collectors from Italy, Brazil, Greece and USA, including many famous fashion-highlights and pieces worn by celebrities like Sting, Madonna, Elton John or Lady Diana and top-models like Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell or Linda Evangelista.

Gianni Versace is a legend who turned fashion into pop culture and invented the supermodel era.

«Gianni Versace — Retrospective» runs till 14 April 2018.

Address: Kronprinzenpalais, Unter den Linden, 3, 10117 Berlin.
