For everybody, who supports my opinion, that taste is a muscle, which needs to be trained, Tel-Aviv is an obligatory place to visit.
First Point: a region in Tel-Aviv, which was built in 30-s, has a style Bauhaus, and which received a name “White City” and which was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2003.
There are few places, where people can find so many architectural masterpieces in one place. Today, there are about 4000 buildings in such style in Tel-Aviv. These houses are not architectural monuments, people live and work there, but 1000 houses are under security of the authorities. Flat roofs, smooth white facades, big balconies, ideal horizontals…
Thousands of jewish repatriated began to cone to Tel-Aviv from different places, especially from infected with fascism Europe, in the beginning of 30-s of the 20th century.
The problem with building cheap and functional houses was solved by architectures-emigrants from german architect school Bauhaus. In Russia this style was called constructionism, in USA – modern, in Europe – art-deco. We should pay tribute to the authorities because this heritage is tremulously kept and modern architectural projects politely match with historical environment.
Authorities in Moscow can learn a lot from Tel-Aviv – it would be great if they remembered about “White City” while signing the decision to demolish another architectural “old junk” in the center of Moscow. Tel-Aviv, in translation “Spring Hill”, occurred as a suburb of an old seaport Jaffa only in 1909. May be, a young genius of this place gives common sense to its inhabitants.
