The Costume Institute’s new exhibition “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” in The Metropolitan Museum of Art explores how fashion designers of different époques integrate the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear. The display with more than 150 ensembles dating from the early 20th century created with traditional embroidery, artificial flowers and lacework up to the present garments with innovative processes, such as 3D printing and computer modeling debunks some mythologies around craft and technology in fashion.

Andrew Bolton, the exhibition’s curator, says that “It’s the first time that fashion and manual labour was elevated to the same status as arts and sciences…”

The exhibition “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology” is on display till August 14.
