The Exhibition of Outfits of Queen Elizabeth II in Edinburgh

On April 21 Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 90th anniversary.

Every year the Queen celebrates two birthdays: the actual on 21 April and the official date of the festivities of her birthday which will be celebrated this year on June 11. Official picnic is scheduled for June 12.

“Fashioning a Reign: 90 Years of Style From The Queen’s Wardrobe,” — exhibition of the collection of Royal dresses opens on April 21 in Edinburgh and later in the summer will move to Buckingham Palace, London. The exhibition displays the most significant events in queen’s life and includes more than 150 outfits — dresses, jewelry and accessories.

For a record 67 years of the reign Her Majesty supported the talents of several British designers. Norman Hartnell worked on the orders of the Royal family in the 1940-ies and is the author of gowns with voluminous skirts in the style of the young Princess. After the coronation tailor with Seville row, Hardy Amies received the coveted Royal order in 1955. Amies once stated: “I do not dress the Queen. The Queen dresses herself. We supply her with clothes — there’s a big difference”. Two decades later the Queen chose a young designer, Ian Thomas and his flowing chiffon dresses. Designer Karl-Ludwig Rehs began to sew outfits for Her Majesty in 1988 and the Queen still wear his suits.

The style of Queen Elizabeth II is well recognized and tested for years. Until we again have “nothing to wear” Royal outfits are designed and planned for the months ahead.
