“The secret alchemy of a collection” exhibition displayed at the Azzedine Alaïa gallery is to reveal the background of Spring/Summer 1992 collection, its history, techniques and meaning. In 1987 Azzedine Alaïa bought the former “hôtel des évêques de Beauvais” in the Marais where he moved in 1991. It was to be both his new work place and home. During the renovation work, Alaïa discovered that the history of the building was connected with Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, better known as the Marquise de Pompadour, who had once lived in that place. The images of Marquise and Versailles inspired Azzedine Alaia for his first collection in the new atelier.
The French couturier incorporated elements reminiscent of XVIII century gowns and corsets, with the closely fitted body silhouettes in contemporary Alaia style. The 1992 Summer collection was the largest Azzedine Alaïa had ever presented, with over 115 outfits and is the most emblematic one.

Exhibition will open on July 2nd, 2018 and run until January 6th, 2019.

Address: 18, rue de la Verrerie, 75004 Paris
