1. Let modesty be the best policy for some other girl in the office. If you want to move up the career ladder, you must dress as if you were already at the top.
2. God is in the detail. It is a big mistake to think no one will pay attention to deep roots or chipped nail polish. Do not economize on manicure and pedicure, on haircut and coloring, on footwear and undergarments.
3. The question, whether it is possible to follow fashion trends in business attire, is quite frustrating for me. Crass stereotype – akin to the popular belief that one should not wash hair every day – is at its basis. Formal attire must be the first thing, that corresponds to fashion trends, it provides for you as well as for your family. An obsolete shoulder or lapel, out-of-date buttons, a has-been jacket length, an unfashionable tone, a worm-eaten silhouette – all this strikes at once and gives its owner away as a retrograde unapt at innovations and outrageously fallen behind his young secretary.
4. Vertical pinstripe and all kinds of tweed pant suits, typical for man clothing, prevail this season. Black pant suits and gemstone-colored outfits are trendy as well. A classic gray suit serves as a wonderful basis for all sorts of looks. A sleeveless jacket is a good alternative for a double-breasted one. A classic double-breasted jacket looks terrific combined with a pencil dress, as well as with pants.
5. Anile tops are prohibited in the office, including an accountant department. Even a woven twinset is a Friday prerogative. Make sure, that slimsy knitwear, revealing your body shape particularities and underwear characteristics, does not creep into formal attire.
6. Respect your body shape and age – it is rather doubtful, that a mini-skirt would look flattering on a stout 50-year old woman.
7. Wearing shoes with stockings is acceptable only, if you happen to be a stylist working for a fashion magazine, and know for sure, what they are supposed to look like. However, peep-toes do not belong in office wear, even if you are a stylist.
8. If you have a sudden urge to wear something see-through or semitransparent, use at least skin color doubles. However, transparency should rather be left for a boudoir – it is inappropriate in office wear.
9. Do not wear stockings the color of a stale corpse. Just simply don’t. No explanation needed.
10. Eyeglass frames, even if they look as good as new, should be obligatory changed once a year. They cannot be over three years old, it is the limit. Search the internet, and check out glasses, used at the latest fashion shows, before going to your optician’s. And do not be afraid to buy glasses of tomorrow, surely, it is hard to face the future in outdated ones.
