Reading is trendy, especially this year – 2015 is announced to be the year of literature in Russia. For Alexey Frey, Kaluga based young artist, it is a good chance to show how Russian famous writers and poets of XIX-XX centuries would dress in 2015: this experiment can help modern generation to be interested in reading. Alexey Frey considers books of old Russian writers to be still up-to-date, that’s why the cult authors could live and write in modern times.

According to collage-artist’s point of view, Alexander Pushkin as a true dandy would wear Bally to attend main events and ceremonies. Mikhail Lermontov would have military style including the look with KENZO clouds. Imagine him reading his poem “Loneliness” in this outfit! Mysterious Nikolay Gogol wearing Costume National Homme total black would read parts from his horror story “Viy” with which-house music DJ-set. Anton Chekhov would visit theater in this ASOS costume to see the launch of the performance staged on his book, wearing also a vintage pince-nez as the element of his personal style. Modern Leo Tolstoy dressed like Nick Wooster writes not only great books but also shows himself as the GQ magazine contributer. A lyric poet Sergey Esenin would work on his book of poems “Hooligan’s Confession” and “Tavern Moscow” wearing J.Crew sweatshirt and trousers. Vladimir Mayakovsky’s wardrobe is seen by Alexey Frey in Ghetto Gothic style: Haider Ackermann, Rick Owens, Obscur and En Noir. Mikhail Bulgakov would promenade near the Patriarch Ponds in this Hermès double-breasted coat with a bag full of manuscripts that do not burn. Anna Akhmatova was a strong woman with a good taste and could wear the pink Sandro coat. Writer of complex psychological plots and a religious thinker Fyodor Dostoyevsky would try on this Givenchy sweatshirt. Maxim Gorky looks like a character from his legend about Danko with this burning heart printed on Dolce&Gabbana jacket. Poet Alexander Block would write one more poem “The Twelve” in the XXI-st century and would dress in minimalistic outfits from head to toe.
When Alexey Frey posted his collages in Tumblr, after a while his works spread over different social nets and got into a timeline of art public pages. Soon he was offered to make a collaboration with a T-shirt and sweatshirt brand. So remember: well read boys and girls are always the most stylish!
